Financially Fit: Affordable ways to have amazing lashes, clear skin, & healthy hair!

Looking your best does not have to cost a lot of money! I get lots of compliments on my eyelashes and people get nervous when they ask me what kind of mascara I use because their afraid of the cost. Same goes for my hair and skin. I am the queen and trial and error. In doing that, and a little education from when I worked for Sephora, I found affordable products that really work. I do not think I do anything out of the ordinary with my make-up, hair, or skin regime. The key is consistency and always taking care of yourself. Today I wanted to share some of my favorite products to keep your skin clear, lashes long, and over overly chemically treated or damaged hair - soft, shiny, and healthy.

I do not use any special mascara on my eyelashes. I go to Ulta once every 6 weeks and spend 15-20 dollars. My favorite brand surprisingly, is Revlon. However, there is a product from Covergirl that I absolutely love as well. The key is how I do it.
I start with Revlon “Lash Fantasy”. The first step before I do anything is apply the conditioner in the white tube. I recommend everyone conditioning their eyelashes before applying mascara. This keeps them strong and from breaking. I am so thankful that even wearing mascara almost every day I never lose lashes. This may sound weird but I do not use the mascara formula that is in the black tube with Revlon fantasy, I just use it for the brush.

Fast Tip: Do not wear Waterproof Mascara. The formula is very rough on your lashes and causes them to break.

What I have discovered about lashes is that the key is in the BRUSH that you use, not solely the formula. I love the brush that comes with the “Lash Fantasy”. It is very strong and durable, and has long bristles to ensure you get your entire lashes polished.

After I condition my lashes with the formula in “Lash Fantasy”, I put that mascara aside and use Revlon’s “3D Extreme” mascara for my first coating. This adds a bit of thickness, but mostly amazing length. The brush, though not quite as long as “Lash Fantasy”, still works very well. I start near my eye lid and forcefully glide it to the tips of my lashes while blinking a few times while gliding the brush across my lashes. I repeat once.

Lastly, I want to add thickness. My favorite mascara formula to use for thickness is Covergirl “Lash Blast”. I hate the brush that comes with this formula, though. Often times this mascara’s formula will come in a bottle and the brush will be separate (see below). What I do is keep the formula and throw the brush away.

Fast Tip: This mascara is often sold in a two-pack as a Buy 1 Get 1 free – be on look out at Target and Wal-Mart for this awesome deal!

Take the brush from the Revlon “Lash Fantasy” (the mascara side, not the side you used for conditioner), dip it in the “Lash Blast” formula, then apply over your lashes like you did previously with the “3D Extreme”.

The total time is only about 3-4 minutes. Often times the look is so dramatic that people think the lashes are fake. I do this rather than use fake lashes because I don’t want to damage my own. This look is perfect for proms, wedding’s, dances, a night out, or if you’re like me and love it so much, everyday!

*I recommend buying the products at “Ulta” because 99% of the time on Revlon and Covergirl products they are buy 2 get 1 free or buy 1 get 1 half off. You can always use an “Ulta Rewards Card” as well to build up points and use them for discounts. Usually every 4 times I shop at Ulta I have enough points to get $4 dollars off of my purchase.*

I have colored and damaged my hair since I was 11 years old. I love to change my hair color and have funky, crazy, and cute new do’s. I have literally had every color in the book. When I was 11 years old Christina Aguilera was getting really popular. I was obsessed with her platinum blonde hair so I decided I wanted to color my hair the same way. Naturally I have very blonde hair but it is more golden, not platinum. I finally convinced my mom to do it for me so we went to Wal-Mart, picked up a box of color, and the process began. I think you all know the ending to this story. I was bright orange.

Another time when I was obsessed with Christina Aguilera is when I was 13 years old and her song “Dirrty” came out. She again had platinum blonde hair with red steaks. And I had to have it! My mom took me to get this done at a local salon where we lived, and the woman turned the whole left side of my head bright pink while the right side was platinum blonde with only a few pink streaks. My mom was mortified. She pulled me out of the salon, drove to a local pharmacy, and picked up a box of color bleach. She was so embarrassed of my hair that she would not even let me get out of the car to pick the color!

Since then I have had it black, blonde, brown, auburn, bright red, and the list could go on. That is a lot of damage to your hair. Thankfully I have a head full of thick hair so I did not lose it all! But it has taken a while for me to nurse it back to health. Even a few months ago my hair was falling out VERY badly. The drain in my shower was getting clogged from my hair falling out so much. At 21 years old that is not something you want to see! I was horrified. I found some great products and I have been strengthen it, and it has not fallen out!

Fast Tips: Do not use box color from your local grocery store or department store, keep your hair trimmed, do not wash your hair every single day, and only use a quarter-size amount of shampoo when washing.

I love the “Sexy Hair” line. They have awesome products! For everyday use, I use their “Healthy Sexy Hair” Soy Milk conditioner. It makes my hair not only feel incredible, but it smells delicious. You can buy a huge bottle at “Ulta” and it will last at least a couple of months. I bought a bottle right before Christmas and I have only used a little over half. Plus, you can use your “Ulta Rewards Card”.

When my hair was super damaged, the product below saved me. “It’s a 10 Miracle Mask”. I used this twice a week and let it sit in my hair for an hour or overnight. This product is a little more expensive ($30.00 at Ulta) and if used twice a week will only last about 2 weeks. However, it is worth every single penny. I recommend this to EVERYONE who has dry, brittle, or damaged hair. Now with my hair healthier, I have cut back to only using it once every week or week and a half.

Every day that I wash my hair I spray Paul Mitchell’s “Super Strong” spray when I get out of the shower. I spray it at the middle of my hair and to my ends (the most damaged parts). With this product you do not rinse it out. Blow dry and style as usual. The most improvement I have seen with this product is the shine in my hair. You can get an 8.5 oz bottle of this at “Ulta” for $7.50. That bottle usually lasts around 4-5 weeks if used 3-5 times a week.

Fast Tip: If you have chemically treated or severely damaged hair, consider getting a protein treatment once every 4-6 month at your local salon. You will be amazing at the difference a treatment can do. Average cost $40-100.

Clear and healthy skin is imperative to everyone. People spend so much money every year paying for expensive treatments and rejuvenations for their faces. My regime is pretty simple and thankfully I rarely have to deal with tons of break outs or pimples. However, no one’s skin is the same nor perfect. If you have severe acne, then who would not get a treatment or seek medical help! But if you’re like me and you just need to keep on top of your skins health to prevent breakouts, blemishes, and pimples then I would recommend this regime. It is a 3 step regime that any Beauty Consultant would tell you to do. The famous words: Cleanse – Tone – Moisturize.

I love the tingle of Clean and Clear “Deep Action Cream Cleanser”. I have been using it every since I started using face wash and it has never let me down. I love the feel of it going to work. Sometimes it can be a little harsh but it clears my skin up quickly when I feel breakout’s coming on.

Next, I tone. For a toner, I use Neutrogena “Clear Pore: Oil Eliminating Astringent”. This not only helps eliminate big clogged pores on your face, but it has really helped with blemishes! I absolutely love this product.

Finally, we moisturize. This is VERY important in taking care of your skin. Keep your skin hydrated. Think of it this way, do you know how terrible you feel when you do not get enough water in your body and become dehydrated? Your skin is the same way. Moisturizing your skin daily also helps with aging. When you are younger, you do not need a heavy moisturizer. It makes the skin much oilier. It took me a long time to find a product that was not so heavy on my skin, but I found it. Aveeno “Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer”. Another benefit, it helps fight blemishes and assist in keeping the skin tone even!

I work out every day after work. Rarely do I ever take off my make-up (if I am wearing foundation) before I work out. Admittedly, I probably should - but I don’t. This causes my skin to break out sometimes. The only place I tend to break out is around my chin and the sides of my face. Whenever I do, I use my little secret weapon: Clean and Clear “Persa-Gel”. Once I have washed, toned, and moisturized my face, I apply the gel to the infected area. Within 3 days most of the pimples are completely gone.

Lastly, I want to share a product with you that I keep in my purse and that I am never without: Clean and Clear “Oil Absorbing Sheets”. If your skin gets super oily and shinny, just take one of the cloths out of the package, rub it across your face, and it eliminates virtually all oil, dirt, and shine. Plus it does not smear your make-up! I love these wipes and I am never without them.

All of the products I have listed for face care can be found at local drug, department, or specialty stores. They are all approximately under $10 apiece as well!
