The number one way to continue with your fitness goals is Motivation. How simple does that sound?
But it is a lot harder than it seems. Without motivation you will never successfully change your life or reach any fitness goals. I receive a lot of messages and emails from my reader's asking how they can lose weight. I will send them blog entries to read and my personal recommendations. A week later some of them come back frustrated and ready to give up because they are not seeing the changes they feel they deserve. The truth is, it takes a lot of time to achieve fitness goals. That is why so many American's and people around the world are overweight; it's easy. Losing weight takes time and in order to be patient through that time you need motivation. That is what I feel most people lack in their weight loss journeys, and unfortunately, motivation is what you need most. Motivation is also something that you can't pay, you can't have someone else give to you... motivation comes from within. You have to look inside of yourself and hold yourself accountable for your own success. I can tell you what keeps me motivated and how I find my drive to continue everyday, and hopefully my words can help boost you on your journey, but ultimately, your success is in your hands.
When I first started to exercise I was 13 years old. (I can't believe that was 9 years old!) I took my Discman (yep- Discman), put in my favorite CD's, and went running up and down my street and my backyard. At first I did it because I wanted to lose weight... and it was hard. But then it became an escape for me. Music was my first love in life and I sang and danced every chance I had. When I would put on my music and go run, I would get lost. It was like in that moment, listening to my music, knowing I'm running - burning calories, and bettering myself, I felt like the next Madonna. I felt like the most beautiful girl in the world. And that felt so good because no one was making me feel that way, I was doing it myself. It gave me hope and gave me something to strive for. Listening to your favorite songs or even motivational speaking when you are exercising is a GREAT way to keep your work out's fun. Another way I kept motivated when I started was falling in love with being sore. How crazy does that sound? But it's very true. I absolutely loved it when I woke up the next morning and my legs or upper body were sore. That meant that I was pushing myself, bettering myself, and I wanted to continue with that challenge. How far could I go? Could I be superhuman? I was definitely going to try, and I still do. Soreness, pain, sweat... all of that is just WEAKNESS leaving your body. Those ways combined helped start a solid foundation for me when I started to exercise. Years later I still blast my music and consistently switch up my training routines to keep my body on edge and changing.
Now that I am older and have been through so much in life, I cherish being able to exercise and eat healthy than ever before. My mother has Multiple Sclerosis and my dad has cancer. I have first handed watched both of them suffer tremendously. Having incurable diseases like that deter you from doing everyday activities. Some days my Mom can't even get out of bed because her body aches so bad. Some days walking from the bedroom to the kitchen is exhausting for them. And the same goes for anyone else out in the world who is suffering from a disease or illness like that. I feel selfish if I am not making the best of my health that I have right now, and continually trying to make myself better. People in the world who are so sick would almost kill to have two healthy legs and a healthy heart so they could go exercise, take a long walk, or lift weights. Not to mention how a healthy lifestyle can prevent so many illnesses.
I found my motivation from never giving up on any dream I have ever had, and by keeping myself healthy I feel like I can do anything. You never know if tomorrow you could be in a car accident or something worse that could change your life forever. That is why you cannot put off your weight loss journey until "tomorrow" or "Monday" - you need to start now and you need to work as hard as you can. Find your motivation so you can continue. I can't put that inside of you, but I definitely try - that is why I never stop writing.
