How to Make Your 2012 Fitness Resolution Work

It is almost time a brand new year. To so many people, this is a brand new start to make a difference in our lives. I really like this concept. It is refreshing and almost feels like a new chance for a lot of people - and sometimes that is really what we need. After losing my weight and being a gym rat for 7 years, I want to share some tips on how to ensure that you keep up with your fitness resolution this year.

1.) Do not crash diet. So it is January 1st and you go out and spend $200 on completely reinventing your pantry and the inside of your refrigerator, that is a sure sign that your resolution is going to fail. Completely changing your diet, especially after all of the Holiday food is going to make you miserable.  You may keep up with it for a day or two, but you have to enjoy what you are eating as well. Start with little changes and steadily keep changing: replace regular and diet soda's for water, drink more water (I always keep a big g, instead of picking up a burger and fries for lunch, try a fresh salad with grilled meat and vinaigrette dressing. Gradually make your way into healthy eating and it will help you enjoy more and be more successful.

2.) Teach Yourself. If you are like I was and did not have a ton of money to go out and spend on having a trainer 5-6 days a week or going to big weight loss clinic then do. your. research. - Be self sufficient. I have tons of blog entries, listed by categories, to help you learn about proper eating and exercise. Having this knowledge stored in your head and not relying on a Nutritionist or Trainer is so much better for you anyway.

3.) Set a Goal. This is a fun way to keep yourself stimulated, motivated, and challenged. It is January 1st and you have a big journey ahead of you. Challenge yourself to lose X amount of weight before summer. Maybe you want to lose 30 pounds before May? Lose X amount of body fat before a big vacation. If you and some of friends all want to lose weight - do it together. Set a challenge for all you. You could each put in 10 dollars and whoever loses the most weight in a set amount of time gets a gift card somewhere. There are ways to keep losing weight fun.

4.) Make it fun. Working out and getting exercise does not mean you have to be stuck in a gym. Me personally, I love being at the gym so that is where I like to get the majority of my exercise. However there are so many ways you can exercise - go hiking, take the dogs for a run on an outdoor trail, Zumba DVD's and other fitness DVD's, jumproping,  (another favorite), taking fitness classes such as kickboxing, step classes, hip hop dance, Pilates, Yoga, etc., and even doing Dances on the Kinect - I did that once and not only was it extremely fun but a great work out. You can make exercise fun and to fit your particular lifestyle.

5.) Document your progress. I previously documented my journey every step of the way. I would write my frustrations down and when I felt like giving up, challenges I overcame, and watched my weight steadily decline. It is very therapeutic to get your frustrations out and your fears and how you are going to overcome them.

What are your 2012 Fitness New Year's Resolutions? What is one goal you really hope to achieve this year?
